Geek/Superhero Therapy

In its basic form, Geek Therapy, or Superhero Therapy, involves the incorporation of superhero characters and other elements from geek culture into evidenced based therapy practice. These can include comics, TV shows, movies, games (board games, video games, role playing games), and other fandoms. Sometimes, children, adolescents, and even adults, might find it difficult to identify their emotions or personal struggles, yet can easily connect with fictional characters whose stories might resonate with them. By using Geek Therapy, clients can learn how to identify their own issues, and process their experiences in a safe and comfortable way, and using concepts and themes that they are most familiar with. By discussing themes found in fictional stories, or identifying unique skills developed through games, clients learn that they too have the potential to be heroes in real life.
